General Program Information
- I am committed to another summer program or will be attending summer school. Can I participate in MSA for only part of the six weeks? Students must commit to all six weeks of the program for 30 hours per week in order to participate.
- What kind of projects and activities do students work on during the program? Students learn coding, financial literacy, art & media, softs skills like reflection and networking. They also get to meet with Meta employees and executives to learn about their career pathway. As you can see, MSA is not just focused on tech!
- What skills will I gain from participating in this program? Students report an increase of self-confidence, reflection, networking, coding, and a most importantly, an excitement for what’s ahead!
- How will the program benefit me in terms of career and college readiness? MSA gives you the opportunity to explore new skills and industries, and helps you see what you might want to pursue in the future.
Eligibility and Application Process
- Who is eligible to apply for the Meta Summer Academy?Applicants must be tenth graders, and full-year residents of East Palo Alto, Belle Haven, or Redwood City.
- Is there a GPA requirement? The minimum cumulative GPA requirement is a 2.0.
- Do I need prior experience in technology or coding to apply? No, we do not consider this in the application process.
- What happens if my recommender doesn’t respond to the recommendation request? Can I submit a new recommender? It is your responsibility to check in with your recommender. You can change who the recommender is from your application, email us if you need assistance. Once the deadline has passed, you will not be able to change who your recommender is.
Logistics and Program Schedule
- When does the program take place, and what are the start and end dates? MSA usually starts the third Monday of June, and is 6-weeks long.
- What are the daily hours, and is the schedule flexible? The schedule is not flexible. The program is usually 9-4pm Mon-Fri. This can sometimes vary, year to year, depending on various factors.
- Will transportation be provided, or do I need to arrange my own? Meta arranges for pick up and drop off around key local areas (libraries, etc.) and you’d need to be arrange transporation to and from these sites.
- Is there a stipend, and if so, how much? The stipend varies year to year and once we know, we include in our community emails and presentations.
- Will food be provided during the program? Yes, students will receive breakfast and lunch.
Mentorship and Networking Opportunities
- Will I get to work with Meta employees, and who are the program mentors? You will meet a lot of Meta employees but will work in a limited fashion with them. The program mentors are shared in community emails and presentations.
- Are there opportunities to network with Meta employees? Yes, students will have plenty of opportunities to meet and network with Meta employees!
- Will there be guest speakers or panelists, and are they different each year? Yes, you will meet about one guest speaker a week, and they vary each year.
Reasons to Apply
- What are some of the main reasons students apply to this program? MSA is a unique opportunity, as you gain exposure into one of the biggest companies in the world, AND you learn that the world of ‘tech’ contains a lot of non-tech related careers, too! It’s a challenging experience and 100% of our students self-report significant growth during this program.
Additional Program Details
- Will I be working with students my own age? Yes, only sophomores are considered for this program.
- Are there any opportunities to continue working with Meta after the program ends? You can apply to Meta University in college. When there are MSA alumni events, alumni will be notified.
- How will I be supported if the workload becomes challenging? You will have a lot of support from various instructors and program managers.
